A Brooklyn, NY Travel Guide And Things To See In The Area

If you are planning a trip to Brooklyn, New York, you will be in for a treat. There is plenty to do and see in New York City’s most populous borough. Home to about 2,600,000 people, Brooklyn is across the East River from Manhattan on the Western End of Long Land. The land portion takes up 71 square miles.

If you are trying to decide when to go, pick either early summer or early fall. If you go in the wintertime you could hit very cold temperatures. The season can bring extreme heat. Traveling there when the weather is nicer will allow you to get out and see a lot more.

Brooklyn would be considered one of America’s 4th largest cities if it was independent. It is home to many different diverse communities which means there are a lot of different places you can go and foods you can eat. There is a lot to see so it is a good idea that you take your time to plan out your trip.

You will want to plan everything ahead of time so that you don’t run out of time for something you really want to see. Planning ahead will allow you to decide what is important to you and will give you time to see everything that you are hoping to experience while you are there. If you have children you also want to keep them in mind and make sure you add a few places they will really like to see and visit too.

Here are some places you should put on your list as they are some of the most favorite spots in Brooklyn. No trip to the borough would be complete without visiting them and enjoying what they have to offer. You will be glad that you decided to see these landmarks and spend time there as they will give you an excellent sense of what the city is like.

1. The Brooklyn Bridge

This bridge was built in 1883 and connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. It is a beautiful experience to walk across it. It is over a mile long and can also be fun for those that like to ride their bikes.

In most cases the bridge will be busy so it is good to keep that in mind when you go. You can also find the Brooklyn Bridge Park which has 85 acres and a carousal from the 1920s with views of Manhattan. That would be a nice stop for the kids before you go somewhere else.

2. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden

The gardens were founded in 1910 and are 52 acres of hundreds of types of flowers. A lot of people like to see the cherry trees and enjoy how pretty it is there. Plan to take some time to walk around and enjoy everything. Check for special events while you are there.

3. Prospect Park

This is a great place to go for a picnic with your family. There are 585 acres of this park and it was created by the same people who created Central Park. You can find a zoo there for the kids or enjoy the 90 acre meadow. You can also find outdoor concerts taking place there in the summertime.

4. Coney Island

This amusement park was created in the early 1900s as a playground for the rich. It has been remodeled for today’s fans. A lot of people from all over New York and the United States like to enjoy the park. When you visit Coney Island you must ride on the Cyclone Roller Coaster that was built in 1927. It is an amazing experience.

5. Brooklyn Children’s Museum

This is the country’s first museum made for children and it was built in 1899. There are over 30,000 objects to look at and kids will love it. From masks, to dolls to fossils, there is a lot to keep them busy. This is a good choice if you are traveling with children and want to find something kid-centered to do.

6. Greenwood Cemetery

This cemetery is home for around half a million New Yorkers that have passed away. The graves for people like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Leonard Berstein can be found there as well. Spend some time walking around to see everything and don’t forget to bring your camera.

There is a lot you will want to take photos of when you are there. You will not only find graves but also great Victorian mausoleums, cherubs, gargoyles and more. You can feel the past as you walk around the cemetery.

7. The Brooklyn Museum

This art museum is the 2nd largest in the city. You can find a lot of great pieces here. They have a 4,000 piece collection from Egypt as well as many different pieces from European artists. 8. Walking Tour of the Brownstones

Many neighborhoods in New York City have Brownstones but if you want to go on a nice walking tour to see them, go to Park Slope in Brooklyn. Here you can see all the great homes and visit a very pretty area. Start your walking tour at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Garfield Place.

9. Visit the Neighborhoods

While you are in Brooklyn it would be a good idea to visit some of the neighborhoods. They all seem to have their own feel based on who has made the areas their home. You can go to the Russian neighborhood of Brighton Beach, visit Park Slope, see the influence of Hipsters in Williamsburg and Bushwick or explore Red Hook or Brooklyn Heights. There is a lot you can do in all of these areas and many different places to explore.

10. New York Aquarium

You don’t want to miss the aquarium. This place has a lot of species from the East River, sharks and more. They also have a 150,000 gallon tank with 35 different species called Glover’s Reef. You don’t want to miss out on seeing all of the different types of sea animals they have.

You can’t forget about all the great food in Brooklyn. There are many different types of restaurants to try depending on what type of food you want to eat. Here are a list of some places you should put on your list.

This steakhouse has been around for 125 years. It is known for its epic steaks and old-fashioned feel. It is in Williamsburg and you are sure to get a good meal if you go there.

2. Talde

If you are looking for something a little less traditional this would be a good pick. The foods are a good mix of Chinese, Thai and Filipino mixed with American. You can also enjoy sitting at the bar and having a good drink.

3. Buttermilk Channel

This restaurant sits on Brooklyn Street Court and brings you farm to table foods. Many of them are southern dishes. You might have to wait a while for a table but it will be worth it after you are able to eat the food that they serve.

4. Teresa’s Restaurant

This place is a great one to take your kids too. It is in Brooklyn Heights and you can get some good Polish comfort food there. The restaurant is large and has a more relaxed atmosphere.

5. Grand Canyon Restaurant

This is another kid friend location to get a good meal. They are known for their amazing burgers but they also offer a lot of other food choices. Opened in 1983 this place is located on Montague Street.

Once you have decided what you are going to do in the city you can plan on where to stay. There are a lot of options in Brooklyn based on your family size and how much you want to spend.

The best thing to do is look for hotels that fit your needs. If you wish to save a little bit of money, look for a chain that will offer you a free breakfast. If you wish to spend a little more, you can find a place with some fantastic views.

Once you decide where you are going to be spending your time you can find a hotel that is located close to a lot of those locations. If you are lucky enough to have a friend or family member that lives in Brooklyn you can stay with them instead.

When preparing for your trip make sure to bring the right type of clothing for the season and a camera. There is going to be a lot of great things to see and take photos of. You don’t want to miss out on that. Make a good plan and you should have an enjoyable trip when you come to visit Brooklyn, New York.
